Find Free Fun

Children at a street festival
With the economy struggling through a painful downturn, more and more families are looking for ways to have fun on the cheap. Whether you're cutting back on vacation or cutting it out entirely, there are plenty of ways to relax for little or no money if you're willing to do a little research. You don't have to spend a lot of money to have a lot of fun.

The summer is especially crowded with free activities; check your local municipal, news, or tourism board websites for evening kids' movies, music in the park, or other community activities. Street fairs and festivals are full of color and activity. Open-air bands may play throughout the day. Vendors may offer free facepainting, sand art, or other activities to attract visitors. Make the most of a night out at the carnival; check to see if one evening offers unlimited rides for a set price.

National and state parks and beaches are often free or low-cost; go have a picnic! Try camping, hiking, or snowshoeing. Check out the National Park Service website or your state's park website to find a park in your area (and maybe a few ideas you hadn't thought of yourself).

When you've had enough of the great outdoors, look to the internet for some free entertainment. You'll be able to find an increasing number of movies and TV shows available for free, as long as you're willing to put up with some short commercial breaks. Check out Joost or Hulu for a range of programs for every interest.

You don't have to be surrounded with Disney characters or exotic scenery to enjoy relaxing quality time with your family. Get out in the fresh air and get some exercise with a bike ride or canoe trip. If you really want to get out of town, look into a site like HomeExchange.com to cut hotel costs and arrange an economical change of pace.

So try out some new, money-saving ideas this weekend or for your next vacation. You might just find yourself bonding with the ones you love, and having more fun with less money than you thought possible!
